"Adapt", A short film by Lavand Sounds
Rather than creating a traditional showreel, the idea behind “Adapt” was to introduce the visual universe of Lavand Sounds through a narrative built around transformation: The film explores how living forms evolve when confronted with different environments. As the landscape changes, each animal morphs into the next while retaining the same violet hue. This short film reflects a creative approach where Lavand Sounds adapts to each client’s vision while preserving its distinct signature, its personality, its identity.
The soundtrack follows the same principle. A recurring vocal chop runs through the piece like a thread, remaining constant, echoing the animals’ violet hue, while the surrounding textures and harmonies gradually evolve as the environments change, carried by a groove inspired by French Touch.
The visual language of the film draws inspiration from Japanese brutalist architecture and the work of Tadao Ando, where light, geometry and raw materials create quiet, contemplative spaces. This sensitivity to minimal architecture is partly rooted in personal experience: Elliott Arquier, the film’s director, was born in Paris and spent much of his childhood in the South of France, where visits to Château La Coste, home to one of Tadao Ando’s pavilions left a lasting impression. Having lived in London for the past ten years, the monumental architecture of Battersea Power Station and Tate Modern also informed the scale and spatial rhythm of the environments.
In contrast to these architectural references, the colour palette and atmospheric texture take inspiration from the paintings of Hiroshi Nagai, introducing soft pastel tones and a subtle grain that evoke a dreamlike, pictorial atmosphere.
